The Manglik Prasango are a set of four familial ceremonies that take place prior to the wedding as a means of preparation for the marriage ceremony itself. The event begins with Ganesh Sthapan during which prayers are offered to Lord Ganesh, a Hindu deity known as the remover of all obstacles. Next, the Mandap Muhrat is conducted in order to sanctify and establish the physical space upon which the rest of the ritual will be conducted. Then, the priest proceeds to lead the Grah Shanti, which is a ceremony that springs from the belief that the stars and constellations exert tremendous influence on the lives of human beings. Hence, the purpose of this ritual is to bring harmony, allowing for an auspicious beginning to the couple’s marriage. Lastly, the Pithi consists of loved ones rubbing a paste made of turmeric, sandalwood powder, and rosewater onto the face, arms, and legs of the bride and groom. This process symbolizes the cleansing of the body and the attainment of maturity before marriage.
